Meet our Teachers at The Space - Yoga, Pilates & GYROTONIC®

Pilates Teachers:

marta hernandezMarta Hernandez, is founder of The Space since 2000, formerly known as Yaletown Pilates.  Her involvement in dance from a young age has given her a natural ability to work with the body through movement.  She received her BFA in Dance from York University in Toronto in 1994 and completed her Pilates certification through The Physicalmind Institute in New York in 1999.  In 2004,  Marta was selected by the Physicalmind Institute to be a Certified Pilates Teacher Training Studio and in 2008 she became head of the Physicalmind Institute for Canada, where she certifies senior teachers to become certifying studios.  She became a certified Level 1 GYROTONIC® teacher in 2004 and in 2008 a certified GYROKINESIS® teacher through the inventor, Julio Horvath.  Marta is now working towards becoming a certified Qi Gong teacher in the Universal Healing Tao System, founded by the Taoist Master Mantak Chia.

Laura CremaLaura Crema - Laura began study of the Pilates Method in 1989 with Dianne Miller in Vancouver. Since then she has been certified by the PhysicalMind Institute in both mat and reformer. Laura is also a jazz vocallst, dancer, choreographer and interdisciplinary performer. She holds a BA in Economics and Fine and Performing Arts from Simon Fraser University.

Suzanne HepburnSuzanne Hepburn - Suzanne became a certified instructor of Pilates in 2004. Being a dancer from a young age gave her a natural ability to work with the body through movement; she was prompted to become a teacher after discovering the remarkable rehabilitative effects that Pilates had on her own body. Suzanne received her Mat Pilates certification through the PhysicalMind Institute in 2004, and her Equipment certification in 2006. In 2008 she successfully completed her certification to become a Teacher Trainer for the PhysicalMind Institute, and has trained Pilates instructors in BC, Saskatchewan, and the Yukon. In 2009 Suzanne received her certification in Physiotherapy Protocols for Pilates, as well as Standing Pilates for the Equipment. Most recently, she became a certified instructor of the GYROTONIC® expansion system in 2010. Suzanne thoroughly enjoys being able to pass her knowledge on to clients in their aim to heal and develop their own body awareness.

Chantel GollerChantel Goller - Chantel has been practicing yoga and pilates since 2003. After suffering from chronic back pain, she was amazed when the pain disappeared after practicing Pilates on a regular basis. To expand her understanding of movement and the body, she took the Teacher Training program with Marta Hernandez at the Physicalmind Institute of Canada. Since then Chantel has been teaching Mat classes and most recently Reformer equipment at The Space. She is also working towards her BFA in General Fine Arts at Emily Carr. Chantel would like to inform people about the many ways pilates can benefit the mind and body.

Rachel NelliganRachel Nelligan:  Rachel, new to Vancouver, developed her enthusiasm for Pilates in Australia. Always interested in movement and how the body works, Rachel became qualified as a Physiotherapist in Australia in 2005. Since graduating Rachel has specialized in pelvic rehabilitation, women's and men's health and chronic pain. A trained Equipment Pilates instructor she gained the most excitement from using Pilates to assist people recovering from injury, improving their body awareness but over all feeling better within themselves.

Rachael PopeRachael Pope:  Rachael’s clear common sense approach and obvious enthusiasm for Pilates helps her to motivate clients of all ages and fitness levels. Focusing on the fundamentals of form and breath in every session, Rachael guides her clients to develop better posture, core stability, alignment and a deeper body awareness leading to true functional fitness and a renewed connection with the strength and power in every person’s body. She inspires her clients to take what they learn in their sessions and apply it to their every day lives. Every class is practical, hands on, and accompanied with a bit of humour to keep it light! Rachael is fully certified in all Pilates apparatus including mat, reformer, cadillac, chair and barrel work. She has been teaching movement and dance for 18 years, and Pilates for 5 years.

Jennifer ReddingJennifer Redding:  Jenn graduated York University with a Degree in Anthropology and Kinesiology, and is now finishing her postgraduate studies in Chinese Medicine. Jenn has experience teaching on all Pilates Apparatus and has been trained and certified through many different schools, including Body Arts and Science International (BASI), PEAK Pilates, STOTT, and Boulder, always taking the best of everything and integrating it into her own ‘special’ style! Jenn’s classes are invigorating, yet focused - foundational moves mixed with practical moves. She adds athleticism with flexibility and will challenge you in a way you will love.

GYROTONIC® Teachers:

Marta has been involved in dance since a young age giving her a natural ability to work with the body through movement. She comes highly trained receiving her BFA in dance from University of York in 1994, completing her Pilates certification through the Physical Mind Institute in New York 1999 and became a certified Level 1 GYROTONIC® teacher in the fall of 2004. Currently she is completing her level 2 GYROTONIC®, and has completed GYROTONIC® for Golfers with Dave Rasmussenfurthering her professional training and running her own studio at the Space since 2000.

Yoga Teachers:

Skyler Warren Skyler began working with movement  9 years ago with competitive dance, and eventually moved to practicing Yoga  4 years later. In 2008, she completed her Advanced 500 Hour Yoga Teacher Training with Prana Yoga College in Vancouver, and has since been teaching various styles in and around Vancouver.  Skyler has been working for and training with the Space since August of 2009. She has worked with Hot, Vinyasa, and various other versions of Hatha Yoga and now specializes in Restorative and Yin styles. Skyler is also Mat Pilates Certified with the PhysicalMind Institute and employs a diverse teaching repertoire when working with both Yoga and Pilates students. Recently Skyler has begun training with Thai Yoga Therapy, during which she uses hands on assisted stretches and movements with clients in a one on one setting, in order to facilitate a deeper opening in the body. Skyler has experience working around many different kinds of injuries and ailments from knee injuries to post rehabilitation for car accidents to auto immune issues and high stress individuals. Currently, Skyler is working towards her Undergraduate degree in Political Science in preparation for Law School and continues her enjoyment of dance through Salsa and Bachata styles.

Reet RavenelliReet Ravenelli:  Reet teaches Flow/Meditative-style Yoga classes, with emphasis on breathing, awareness and safety. In her classes, you connect your breath with the movement of your body, with the natural unfolding of the flow of postures. Deepening into the  asana, energy restarts flowing providing relaxation for the busy mind. Reet's journey with Yoga started over 10 years ago. She has studied Ayurveda, and practiced meditation and yoga. Reet is a Registered Yoga Teacher and teaches Hatha and Restorative Yoga, having graduated from Prana Yoga College in Vancouver. She also earned her Certification as a Mat Pilates Teacher at the PhysicalMind Institute in Vancouver and is currently working towards  her Pilates Equipment Certification.
